Mariner's Church, founded in 1842 for Great Lakes sailors, is dwarfed by the Renaissance Center directly in back. Shot on a beautiful fall day in Detroit, this is an updated concept from a project I did while at University of Michigan where I highlighted the differences between churches and sky scrapers.
Founded in 1842 for the sailors of the Great Lakes, the Mariners’ Church is more than a name to the honor those in the profession, the interior holds many nautical themed items: overhead lights that mimic ships’ wheels; windows paying homage to sailors and Lakes; numerous photos; and even model ships that have sailed and wrecked on the Great Lakes. In 1975 Gordon Lightfoot referenced the church in his song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" with the line referencing “the Maritime Sailors’ Cathedral”, and although the original copyrighted lyrics were never officially changed, he has changed the lyrics when performing live to reflect knowledge he’s gained of the church and Edmund Fitzgerald last moments. I highly recommend attending a service here if you have the opportunity. Built in 1977 by the Ford family, the GM Renaissance Center rises high into the air behind the church as Michigan’s tallest building (a title it still holds as of this writing) and is a strong juxtaposition against the church.
