Taken on a rainy day before this turn-around was closed off to Woodward Avenue, the subject of this photo is often called “the Joe Louis fist”, but it is formally titled, “Monument to Joe Louis”, and was a gift from Sports Illustrated to Detroit in 1986. It was created by sculptor Robert Graham from cast bronze and represents the strength and tenacity that Joe Louis showed throughout his life inside the ring as well as in his fight against segregation. It’s 24 feet long and weighs 8,000 lbs. For anyone looking for a full statue of Joe, it’s further west on Jefferson Ave, inside of TCF Center (formerly Cobo Center).
